I'm trying to give Fenris the slave book thing, but I lose points with him. I read somewhere that no matter what, you're supposed to GAIN points with him. What am I doing wrong?Fenris is an !@#hole in Dragon Age II?
If you already are far enough along on the rival path giving him the gifts will only earn you more rival points. This is true of all companions, the effect the gift has depends on your current relationship. But, rivalry isn't a bad thing. It just means you agree to disagree. Try to max out his rivalry. It is in your best interest to push all companions towards either 100% rivalry or friendship by the end of the game.
