Can I play Dragon Age II even though I've never played the first one?

The story in DA2 barely has anything to do with the first game.

The most the game has to do with the first are cameos by other characters. You'll see people presented in a "LOOK WHO IT IS!!!" kind of fashion, but since you didn't play the first game you'll undoubtedly not have a clue who they are.

Lorewise, there's all sorts of things you may not know much about without playing the first game, but don't matter as much from a story perspective but more about understanding the fictional world in DA2 (For example, you won't know what the Deep Roads are, or the Chantry, or the Templars, or Eluvian. But don't worry, you'll learn about these in DA2 as you progress)

DA2 is spread across 3 chapters, each with it's own self contained story that doesn't really reference the first game at all, especially after the first chapter. You should have no problem understanding the story throughout the game.

In many ways, DA2 is a huge disappointment compared to DA:O. But considering you're new to the series, there's nothing stopping you from enjoying it as a new game.
well that kinda depends on who you are. if your like me than you will play all of the games in a row if there is a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th one b/c it really really bothers me if i don't go in order on things.Can I play Dragon Age II even though I've never played the first one?
Well , this won't be a huge problem , the history is not the same , so I don't see why you should play the first game , just go for the 2 , which is even better then the one.
You play as a different character and have different party members, so you shouldn't be too confused, although Dragon Age: Origins is more of a traditional RPG, whereas Dragon Age II has more action elements.Can I play Dragon Age II even though I've never played the first one?
Well the first one you should play first cause well in the fisr its were the story starts you kill the dragon then you play the second one were the story continues! Hope my answer Helped
Yes it will work. I actually have a save from DAO but it also gave option to start a whole new champion campaign. No worries. It works :)
