Is overclocking an amd athlon II x4 630 necessary for newer games?

Is it good enough for modern games on highest quality? E.G. Crysis, Fallout 3, Dragon age, Civ 5, etc. Or does this all depend on the Video Card which I know mine is good enough. (Nvidia Geforce gtx 465)Is overclocking an amd athlon II x4 630 necessary for newer games?
It should be fine. Those games should run quite well on both your processor and your graphics card (though be wary of Crysis). Is overclocking an amd athlon II x4 630 necessary for newer games?
You'd definitely see an improvement in those games, but if you're hitting about 40 or 50 frames per second on 1080p resolution, then I suppose there isn't a need to overclock.

The Athlon 2 x4 630 is clocked at 2.8 ghz, but it's not difficult to OC it to 3.4 ghz.

As long as you have a decent motherboard, fast enough RAM (DDR3 1333mhz or better) and a good CPU cooler, go ahead.

An aftermarket CPU cooler is a must -- the stock cooler doesn't do a very good job of cooling an over clocked processor. I suggest a Hyper 212 Plus:

No it isn't necessary to overclock in order to play games. I never recommend overclocking because you are running the hardware out of spec and asking for trouble when you do it. What overclocking is, is it is compensating for a lack of proper parts to run the game.
